The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) teaches that the Great Apostasy was a period following the deaths of the apostles, during which priesthood authority, scriptural truth, and key gospel doctrines were lost or corrupted from the original Christian church. This resulted in a spiritual decline and widespread confusion, which only ended with the Restoration of the gospel through the Prophet Joseph Smith in the early 19th century.
